(Washington, DC) – March 4, 2016 – Capitol Hill Consulting Group Senior Vice President, former Congressman Steve Southerland (R-FL) delivered the Keynote Address at the Advocacy Leaders Network Roundtable on Friday, March 04, hosted by the Congressional Management Foundation.  The event brought together experts from the political arena to discuss opportunities for advocacy during an election year.

Congressman Southerland engaged the crowd by drawing upon his experience as a business owner, Member of Congress and lobbyist to detail strategies behind successful engagements with Capitol Hill. Given his experience on all sides of the advocacy spectrum, the Congressman offered a unique perspective on effective techniques, stressing the importance of connecting the issue directly to the member’s district through public opinion polling and real data as it pertains to constituents.

Most importantly, Southerland emphasized the critical importance of quality people to successful advocacy efforts. “You can’t be an ‘A’ organization if you’re sending in ‘C’ people,” he said. Referring to these “A” people as the “Paul Reveres,” Southerland stressed that the key to success is surrounding yourself with people who know where to go, have the intel, and know that you don’t get what you don’t ask for.
